My answer is a Yes. You can edit your film by using the DataDVD provided with your order, this will give you the best quality and ease of importing into you computer. The Mp4 file that we put onto the DataDVD is a high quality compressed file used by almost all video editing software, whether it is a Mac or PC. We do not recommend trying to transcode your DVDs into a file and try to edit from there the quality is not as good and you will end up with large files and really a big mess to try to sort out.
8mm, 16mm silent or sound film should be just fine to transfer. However if the film was stored in a hot (attic) or moist (basement or barn) these two environments are deadly to film, video tape, slides, and pictures as well. There are a few things you can check to see if your film is ok to transfer, open the film can and see if there is a strong sour vinegar, or chemical smell, or the film has a curl from the edges to the middle, or if the film sticks together these are sure signs of film damage that will prevent us to be able to transfer your film. We inspect, clean your film and check over your splices which can become brittle over time.
The DVDs that we produce here at Pacific Imaging will play in a vast majority of DVD players. DVD’s come in two flavors, there are “replicated” or stamped DVDs that are manufactured for the masses which you would buy at a store. The second is authoring DVDs where you start out with a blank media (DVD) and a computer to “burn” the encoded video data onto the DVD. This process is widely used and is very economical, however it is not 100% compatible. We use a DVD-R format which is proven to work on the majority of the players out in the market today, but there are some manufacturers that make DVD players that may have varying degrees of compatibility. The reality of it all is this we use a proven DVD format, we use Verbatim Media (which are rated to be among the top DVD manufactures) and we test every DVD that leaves our facility. If you find that your DVD is not compatible with your player we will be happy to re-burn your DVD to a different format.
